Nollywood actress Omobolarinde Akinyanju, also known as Ashabi and the babymama of singer Portable, has made a strong statement for the New Year.
Taking to Instagram, the actress revealed her resolution for the year, declaring that she will no longer accept unpaid work or low-paying influencer deals.
In her Instagram post, Ashabi told her fellow actors that if they wanted her to be part of their projects, they must ensure they have included payment in their budgets. She stated,
You are my friend, and you really want me on your project this year. Make sure you include payment in your budget. Or don’t call me at all. I won’t even be mad. But I will be mad if you expect me to support you for free.”
The actress also directed a message to vendors seeking her influence for free or at minimal rates. She firmly expressed, “You are a vendor, and if you want me to influence your brand for free or at silly rates, don’t bother o. I’d rather not work with you.” Ashabi, a mother of two, explained how important it was for her to work in a way that supports her financially, as she noted,
Bills are not joking with anyone right now, so if I work for free how do I pay my bills?”
In addition, Ashabi shared that she would be saying “no” to many requests this year, as she aims to focus on projects she truly enjoys and is proud of. She stated,
I want to do jobs I will be proud of. I want to be happy doing my job, not just coming online to post location pictures or influencer deals.”
This resolution comes after Ashabi had a turbulent year, where she faced online trolls and personal struggles. In June 2023, she slammed a troll who called her a “babymama” and responded with a biting comment. Ashabi, known for her outspoken nature, did not hold back in defending herself against the online critic.
Earlier in February 2024, Ashabi opened up to her fans, sharing how the pressure of her career was taking a toll on her physical and mental well-being. She cried out for help, expressing how she was feeling drained but also grateful for the support of her fans. Ashabi urged her followers to watch her movie to help provide her with the strength she needed during this challenging time.
Moreover, last year, Ashabi had to deal with a scammer using her name and images to deceive people. She shared screenshots of their conversations and asked her fans to report the account, warning them not to fall victim to the fraud.
