The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged students in southern Nigeria to take advantage of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to alleviate financial challenges in pursuing higher education.
In a statement issued on Monday by Abdul-Yekinn Odunayo, Clerk of the Senate at NANS National Headquarters, and made public in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the association expressed concern over the low participation of southern students in the scheme.
Odunayo highlighted that the education loan initiative, introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, aims to provide sustainable higher education opportunities and skill development for Nigerian students. He noted that students from northern Nigeria have been utilizing the loan more effectively and encouraged their southern counterparts to follow suit.
Lauding NELFUND for simplifying the loan application process, Odunayo commended the Tinubu administration for establishing the program. He emphasized its impact on enabling indigent students to achieve their educational aspirations.
“The student loan scheme has transformed the lives of many Nigerian students, making higher education more accessible. It is vital for students in the south to leverage this opportunity,” he said.
The NANS official also called on NELFUND to intensify awareness campaigns about the scheme, particularly in southern regions, to ensure more equitable access.
Odunayo reaffirmed the association’s commitment to promoting the welfare of Nigerian students and urged NELFUND to uphold transparency and accountability in its operations.
