Beauty influencer and entrepreneur Laura Ikeji has come to the defense of Nollywood actress Annie Idibia, who has been trending for her behaviour on the reality show Young, Famous & African.
Annie, the wife of legendary singer 2Baba, has faced backlash for her emotional outbursts and actions during the show.
In an Instagram story, Laura urged anyone who knows Annie personally and recognizes her kindness to refrain from joining the crowd in criticizing her. She emphasized that those who have benefited from Annie’s generosity should defend her when others speak negatively about her, or at the very least, remain silent instead of contributing to the negativity.
Laura, who has also appeared on reality shows, acknowledged the mental toll these shows can take, urging people to maintain positive energy around Annie. She wrote,
Reality shows will mess with your head. So if you have known her before the show, continue to show her love. Let people who haven’t encountered her judge her from the show, but you. You have met her and she’s your girl, maintain that positive energy. Do not join the negative conversation.”
She also added a personal note on loyalty, saying, “If you’re Annie’s friend and you know her and know that she’s an amazing person, please do not join people who haven’t met her to kick her down. If she has ever been nice to you, defend her where people speak ill of her. If you don’t want to defend her, keep mute, do not join them to speak ill of her.”
Laura further shared her personal stance on loyalty:
In my heart, I might know you’re wrong, but I will never kick you in front of our enemies. I don’t care about friendship, but I know you, and like you, I will never kick you while you’re down. No matter how stupid I look.”
Annie’s behaviour on the show has raised eyebrows, particularly when she opened up emotionally about suffering a miscarriage while pregnant with twins the year before. She revealed how difficult 2024 had been for her, explaining why she had not been as present on the show or attending events. In another emotional moment, Annie was seen Facetiming her husband, 2Baba, asking for permission to return home after tensions with her co-star, Zaria Hassan, escalated.
The actress has faced public scrutiny before, including in 2022, when her brother, Wisdom Macaulay, claimed she was violent and had introduced him to drugs. These claims have added fuel to the ongoing conversation about her behaviour.
