Nigerian celebrity designer Toyin Lawani has come to the defense of actress Annie Idibia following criticism of her perceived toxic behaviour on the popular reality show Young, Famous, and African.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, now deleted, Toyin expressed her support for Annie, describing her as real and unapologetic, while highlighting the challenges she faces on the show.
In her post, Toyin Lawani described Annie Idibia as someone who speaks her truth without sugarcoating her opinions. While acknowledging that Annie’s directness could be polarizing, she emphasized that this trait is both a flaw and a blessing.
Toyin defended Annie’s controversial comments about Zari’s relationship with a younger man, stating, “Did Annie lie about what she said? Is the husband not younger?” She admitted that the timing and setting—Zari’s wedding—were inappropriate but argued that the moment contributed to the show’s drama and appeal.
Toyin revealed her concern about Annie’s emotional well-being, accusing the show’s producers of exploiting her vulnerability. She noted that Annie appears to be going through a difficult period, which has been exacerbated by the reality show.
I see a girl struggling on that TV, and I see the TV producers exploiting her,” Toyin wrote. She praised Annie for her courage in showing vulnerability and expressed empathy for her emotional pain, saying, “Not everyone will let anyone even see them broken.”
Toyin suggested that Annie joined the latest season of Young, Famous, and African to defend herself after facing criticism in the previous season. However, she added that Annie’s genuine nature and soft-heartedness make her unsuited to the “mean girl” persona.
Reflecting on Annie’s behaviour at Zari’s wedding, Toyin noted that while Annie tried to apologize for her actions, she wasn’t given the chance.
Hurt people hurt people,” Toyin explained, adding that Annie’s struggles were evident throughout the season.
Toyin urged viewers to show compassion toward Annie instead of rushing to judgment. She encouraged critics to consider the trauma Annie may be dealing with behind the scenes and challenged them to offer tangible support.
All of you saying she needs help, ask for her account number. By the time you people donate one billion dollars for her, it will wipe her tears,” she quipped, highlighting the importance of understanding and empathy.
Toyin Lawani’s passionate defense of Annie Idibia shines a spotlight on the challenges of being vulnerable in the public eye. As Annie navigates her personal struggles on a global stage, Toyin’s words serve as a reminder that reality TV stars are human too, deserving of compassion and support amid criticism.
