Nasir El-Rufai, the immediate past governor of Kaduna State, has criticized the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing it of deviating from its original goals and cultivating substandard leadership.
While addressing a national conference in Abuja on improving democracy in Nigeria, the former governor declared the country’s state of governance and opposition to be a national emergency.
El-Rufai, who posted the report on his X Twitter on Tuesday, voiced worry over the APC’s lack of internal democracy and functioning party structures.
He said:
“I no longer recognise the APC. No party organ has met in two years—no caucus, no NEC, nothing. You don’t even know if it is a one-man show; it’s a zero-man show.”
He criticized the quality of leadership arising from political parties, blaming it on unqualified delegates.
“You cannot afford to have illiterates, semi-illiterates, and cunning people as your leaders. This is why we end up with the poor leadership we have today,” El-Rufai stated.
The former governor urged political parties to strengthen criteria for candidates and delegates, emphasizing that the constitution’s basic requirement of a high school diploma should not enough for nominations.
