Renowned Nigerian chef and food blogger Tolani Osikoya, popularly known as Chef T, has opened up about a terrifying robbery experience her family endured.
In an emotional Instagram post on Wednesday, Chef T recounted the 2003 incident that left her family traumatized but ultimately strengthened their bond.
Chef T shared that the traumatic event occurred while she and her siblings were doing math homework with their father. Suddenly, nine armed robbers burst into their home, demanding money. When they discovered her father had none, they brutally beat him.
The robbers turned their attention to her mother, forcing her to surrender her jewelry. In a desperate attempt to protect his family, her father jumped out of a window to seek help, risking serious injury.
Tragically, her mother was struck on the head with a machete by one of the robbers before they fled. Despite the violence, the family survived the ordeal without further harm.
Sharing family photos in her post, Chef T expressed immense gratitude to God for keeping her family safe during the terrifying experience. She referred to her parents as “heroes” for their bravery, particularly her father’s selfless act of distraction and her mother’s courage amidst the attack.
Chef T wrote:
“The year was 2003, these are our heroes. Dad jumped to distract them and save us, knowing they were not going to shoot. Mum locked the door in a pool of her own blood. Grateful that we are complete today. This traumatizing experience has never left me.”
The chef revealed that sharing this story is a step toward healing from the emotional scars left by the ordeal.
Tolani Osikoya, also known as Diary of a Kitchen Lover, is celebrated for her affordable recipes, practical kitchen tips, and visually stunning food photography. She is a certified chef from the Italian Chef Academy and has taught over 500 students through various platforms.
Beyond her culinary skills, Chef T has partnered with over 100 brands and was recognized as one of Africa’s 50 most influential women.
