The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, has warned that South Kordofan and Blue Nile states are on the verge of catastrophe as violence continues to escalate.
In a statement on Thursday, Nkweta-Salami said the latest outbreak of hostilities in Kadugli, South Kordofan, had claimed at least 80 civilian lives and left many others injured.
She condemned the reported use of women and children as human shields, the obstruction of humanitarian aid, and the detention of civilians, including minors.
According to her, civilians have long struggled to access lifesaving assistance due to a severe shortage of medical supplies, restricted humanitarian access, and ongoing conflict.
“This is a critical moment, as the consequences of food insecurity are already being felt in parts of South Kordofan, where families are surviving on dangerously limited food supplies and malnutrition rates are rising sharply,” she said.
Nkweta-Salami warned that continued fighting would exacerbate human suffering, leaving more people without access to vital aid and resulting in further loss of life.
The Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been engaged in deadly clashes for control of the country since April 2023.
She urged all parties in Sudan to de-escalate tensions and take immediate action to protect civilians and essential infrastructure.
