Funke Akindele, Nollywood actress and Queen of the box office, has credited God as the sole force behind her incredible success story.
Speaking at the Media Independent Practitioners Association of Nigeria (MIPAN) 2025, the award-winning filmmaker reflected on her rise to fame. She confidently declared that nobody but God made her a star. Funke recounted how the concept for her iconic Jenifa brand first came to her, detailing her early days of scriptwriting and how a supportive industry colleague advised her to continue building the brand while also providing financial backing for her projects.
The beloved actress also shared insights on adapting to shifts in audience behavior and the importance of staying relevant in Nigeria’s dynamic content marketing landscape.
Reflecting on a pivotal moment, Funke revealed how singer Dbanj played a significant role in keeping the Jenifa brand alive. At his anniversary dinner in June last year, he encouraged her to keep the fire burning for Jenifa and supported her financially in carrying out her next big project.
Previously, Funke opened up about her struggles before achieving stardom, sharing how challenges strengthened her resolve to inspire others. During the production of her highest-grossing movie, A Tr!be Called Judah, she described herself as living proof of perseverance, stating she learned to stand tall through the trials.
Currently, Funke reigns supreme as the Queen of the box office. Her latest movie, Everybody Loves Jenifa, has shattered records, becoming the highest-grossing film in West Africa with ₦1.6 billion, surpassing her previous hit, A Tr!be Called Judah, which earned over ₦1.4 billion.
