Omowunmi, the wife of the late Nigerian singer Mohbad, gave an emotional speech at the 17th Headies Awards on April 27th, 2024, where her husband was posthumously honoured.
The singer, who tragically passed away in September 2023, was recognized with two prestigious awards—Best Street Music (Street Hop Artiste) of the Year and Viewer’s Choice for his song Egwu featuring Chike.
During her speech at the award ceremony, Omowunmi expressed her deep gratitude to the Headies organizers for honoring Mohbad’s memory and legacy. Holding back tears, she spoke about her late husband in a powerful way, stating that she doesn’t refer to him as “late” because his presence still lives on, especially through their son, Liam. She believes that one day, Liam will fully understand the magnitude of his father’s greatness and the impact he made through his music.
Omowunmi said:
On behalf of myself, my son Liam, my husband’s immediate younger brother Adura, and the rest of the Imonelization family, we want to specially thank you for this award. Although Mohbad isn’t here with us anymore, he lives on. I don’t like to address him as my late husband cause he lives forever, especially through our son Liam. Although he may be too young to grasp the depth of his father’s greatness, I know, and I believe that one day, he will know. Thank you so much Headies. Thank you for shining a light on my husband. Thank you for honouring his memory and legacy. It means so much to me, his son, and the entire Imonelization.”
The loss of Mohbad has been incredibly hard on his family, especially Omowunmi. Since his death in September 2023, she has been vocal about the emotional and legal battles she faces. She opened up about questioning God for taking her husband at such a young age and revealed the personal struggles she’s faced, including fights over her husband’s estate.
Earlier this year, Omowunmi spoke about the difficulties she’s experienced, including receiving threats from Naira Marley and others in the wake of her husband’s passing. Additionally, there was controversy surrounding the paternity of their son, Liam, with demands for a DNA test to confirm Mohbad’s fatherhood.
In February 2024, there was a legal development in the ongoing battle over Mohbad’s estate and his son’s paternity. Mohbad’s father publicly called for a DNA test, and even the Chief Magistrate Court in Ikorodu granted an order for a notice to be served to Omowunmi regarding the paternity test. The case has been ongoing as the legal team attempted to serve her the notice on multiple occasions.
