South Korea’s acting president and current Prime Minister, Han Duck-soo, is expected to resign on Thursday in preparation for a presidential run in the upcoming June 3 election.
Han, 75, has been serving as acting president following the impeachment and removal of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who faced intense backlash over his brief declaration of martial law.
Han is scheduled to formally announce his resignation and address the nation, with plans to officially declare his candidacy the next day.
Once he steps down, Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok is expected to take over as acting president, in line with South Korean law.
His decision to enter the presidential race has gained momentum due to rising public support.
Han is seen as the leading conservative candidate and is likely to face off against liberal Democratic Party nominee Lee Jae-myung, a former governor and prominent opposition figure.
Under South Korean election law, public officials must resign from their positions by May 4 to be eligible to run for president, and Han’s anticipated resignation falls within this deadline.
The upcoming election follows a period of political instability in the country, marked by the downfall of President Yoon and legal controversies surrounding other potential candidates.
Han’s candidacy is expected to significantly influence the direction and tone of the race as South Koreans prepare to choose their next leader.
