A series of bombings in South Sudan’s Fangak County have resulted in at least seven deaths and 20 injuries, according to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).
The attacks also destroyed the region’s only functioning hospital and pharmacy, leaving over 110,000 residents without access to medical care.
The first bomb struck the pharmacy, causing a fire that damaged the adjacent hospital. A subsequent drone strike targeted the town of Old Fangak, leading to additional casualties.
The perpetrators and their motives remain unclear, as government and army officials of South Sudan have not commented on the incident.
MSF condemned the attack as a violation of international law, emphasising the devastating impact on civilians and the healthcare infrastructure.
The bombing is part of a broader pattern of violence in the region, which has seen increased tensions and military activity since the arrest of opposition leader Riek Machar in March 2025.
The international community has expressed concern over the escalating violence and its potential to undermine the fragile peace established by the 2018 agreement.
Calls have been made for all parties in South Sudan to exercise restraint and return to dialogue to prevent further bloodshed.
