Nigerian music icon Davido has joined the growing chorus of voices demanding the release of social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as Very Dark Man (VDM).
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the Grammy-nominated artist praised VDM’s impactful work, highlighting how the activist’s efforts have positively affected lives.
The support I’m seeing for VDM everywhere is encouraging…makes one want to do more for the masses. FREE MY GUY,” Davido wrote.
VDM was reportedly arrested by the Nigerian Police Force in Abuja, as confirmed by his lawyer, Denise Adeyanju. His detention has sparked widespread calls for his release, with several prominent figures, including actress Rita Edochie and socialite Cubana Chief Priest, voicing their concerns.
Veteran actress Rita Edochie described VDM as “societally outstanding,” emphasizing his role as a fearless truth-teller and advocate for the voiceless. “If he is silenced, no other person is ready to take his place in lending a voice to society,” she warned.
Cubana Chief Priest, in a heartfelt Instagram post, lamented the activist’s absence, stating, “The voice of the voiceless is missing. The hope of the hopeless is nowhere to be found.
Despite his controversial lifestyle, VDM has garnered admiration from celebrities and fans alike. Last year, Davido referred to him as a “freedom fighter,” sparking a friendship that saw VDM stand by the singer during a contractual dispute.
Big Brother Naija Level Up winner Phyna even nominated VDM as a candidate for the Youth Democratic Party (YDP) presidency, believing he could bring about positive change for Nigeria.
However, not everyone is in support of the activist. Reality star Vee Iye questioned his supporters, emphasizing the need for collective responsibility over individual heroics.
