The Nigerian government has announced the creation of more than 90,160 new jobs in the first quarter of 2025, achieved through initiatives led by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN).
This milestone is part of the government’s broader strategy to stimulate economic growth and reduce unemployment by empowering small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
According to Charles Odii, Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of SMEDAN, over 116,000 entrepreneurs received support during this period.
The agency facilitated the formalisation of thousands of small businesses, assisting them in registering with the Corporate Affairs Commission. This formalisation enables these businesses to access funding opportunities, integrate into supply chains, and compete in both local and international markets.
Odii highlighted the impact of the agency’s “GROW Nigerian” strategy, which focuses on providing Guidance, Resources, Opportunities, and Workforce support to SMEs across the country.
He emphasised that these efforts align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which prioritises strengthening foundational structures and investing in initiatives that deliver tangible economic benefits.
The government’s commitment to SMEDAN and SME development reflects a recognition of the sector’s potential to drive inclusive economic growth and job creation.
By supporting entrepreneurs and facilitating business formalisation, the administration aims to create a more robust and competitive economic environment.
