Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), the ruling party at the federal level.

The announcement was made during a ceremony at the Government House in Uyo, where several APC governors gathered to welcome him into the party.

Eno submitted his resignation letter to his ward chairman, with copies sent to both state and national PDP leaders.

He explained that his decision followed months of consultations with various stakeholders across Akwa Ibom State, stressing that this was a carefully considered move rather than a sudden decision.

The governor said the defection was motivated by a desire to better align the state with the federal government’s economic and development policies. He stated that his decision was made from a position of strength and expressed full support for President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda.

Several prominent APC governors attended the event, including those from Imo, Cross River, Lagos, Ogun, Delta, Edo, and Ebonyi states.

Their presence highlighted the importance of Eno’s defection and marked him as the second PDP governor to join the APC in recent weeks, following the governor of Delta State.

This move represents a major political shift for Akwa Ibom, which has been under PDP leadership for 26 years. The state now has an APC governor, signalling a potential change in the region’s political landscape.

Following his defection, Governor Eno reportedly asked his commissioners and political appointees to decide whether to follow him into the APC or resign. Some chose to remain with the PDP instead of defecting.

Eno’s decision to join the APC aims to ensure that Akwa Ibom is fully integrated into the national development agenda and can benefit from federal initiatives. By aligning with the ruling party, he hopes to boost cooperation and accelerate infrastructural and economic projects in the state.
