Nollywood legend Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has spoken out about the challenges facing the Nigerian film industry, drawing a stark comparison with Hollywood.
Despite decades of work in Nollywood, she highlights the absence of residual payments and calls for structural reforms.
The celebrated actress revealed she has been working in Hollywood for four years, during which she completed two test projects and receives monthly residuals. Contrasting this with her 30 years and over 310 projects in Nollywood, she stated she has received no residual payments from the Nigerian industry.
She emphasized the urgent need for Nollywood to develop a proper structure to support artists financially and professionally.
“Just 4 years in Hollywood.
2 test projects
Monthly residuals.
30 years in Nollywood.
310+ projects
No residuals.
Nollywood needs structure.”
Recently, Mary Remmy Njoku also questioned the tangible benefits of joining Nollywood guilds and associations, admitting she struggled to explain their value to a budding filmmaker.
Media personality Daddy Freeze criticized veteran actor Nkem Owoh’s praise of Nollywood’s competitiveness with foreign films, calling it unrealistic and urging for honesty about Nollywood’s current standing.
Similarly, veteran actor Kanayo Kanayo condemned Nollywood filmmakers who flood platforms like YouTube with low-quality content, claiming it damages the industry’s foundation.
Yoruba actress Debbie Shokoya also voiced her frustrations over the poor quality of some Yoruba films on YouTube, calling for colleagues to improve standards and allow every department in production to perform their roles effectively.
