Jigawa identifies major obstacles delaying legal processes

The Jigawa State Government has revealed several key challenges contributing to delays in the state’s judicial system, acknowledging that these bottlenecks hinder timely justice delivery.

During a review of the state’s legal framework, officials highlighted inadequate staffing in courts, logistical constraints, and prolonged adjournments as primary factors slowing down court proceedings.

According to the state’s Attorney General, the shortage of judges and supporting legal personnel has created a significant backlog of cases, with some courts handling workloads far beyond their capacity.

This imbalance has led to extended trial periods, leaving many litigants waiting years for resolutions. Additionally, poor infrastructure in some local courts, including a lack of proper recording systems and inadequate office facilities, further complicates the efficient handling of cases.

The government also identified frequent adjournments as a major concern, often caused by logistical issues or the unavailability of legal representatives. These delays disproportionately affect vulnerable groups, including women and low-income residents who cannot afford prolonged legal battles.

To address these challenges, the state government plans to recruit more judges and magistrates while upgrading court facilities across key locations. The Attorney General emphasised that digitising court records and implementing stricter case management protocols will help reduce unnecessary postponements.

Stakeholders in the justice sector have welcomed the government’s acknowledgement of these systemic issues but urge swift implementation of reforms. Legal practitioners in the state suggest that alternative dispute resolution mechanisms should be strengthened to reduce pressure on conventional courts.

The Jigawa State Judiciary has assured residents of its commitment to improving service delivery, recognising that an efficient legal system is crucial for maintaining public trust and social order.
