The management of a major market in Abia State has issued a stern warning to traders involved in the sale of counterfeit and expired goods, declaring that offenders will face severe sanctions.
This announcement comes following increasing complaints from consumers about substandard and potentially harmful products being sold in the market.
Market leaders stated that a special task force has been set up to monitor and inspect goods sold within the premises. Any trader found guilty of stocking or distributing fake, expired, or adulterated products will be penalised, including possible revocation of trading licenses and legal prosecution.
The move aims to protect consumers from health risks and maintain the market’s reputation as a reliable trading hub.
Officials emphasised that the crackdown is part of broader efforts to sanitise business practices in the market, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations. They urged buyers to report suspicious products to the authorities for immediate action.
The market association also plans to collaborate with regulatory agencies, such as the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), to conduct regular quality checks.
Consumers have welcomed the initiative, expressing relief over the planned measures to curb the circulation of dangerous goods. Traders, meanwhile, have been advised to verify the authenticity and expiration dates of their stock to avoid penalties. The market administration assured the public that strict enforcement would be sustained to eliminate fraudulent practices and safeguard public health.
