The Niger State Government has launched the distribution of a N1 billion relief package to residents of Mokwa affected by recent devastating floods.
The initiative aims to provide immediate financial support to victims who lost homes, farmlands, and businesses when heavy rainfall caused the River Niger to overflow its banks last month.
Governor Mohammed Umar Bago announced the intervention during an assessment tour of the impacted communities, where he assured victims of the government’s commitment to their welfare.
The funds will be disbursed through a transparent process supervised by a special committee comprising local government officials and traditional rulers to ensure equitable distribution to the most vulnerable households in Mokwa.
The flooding submerged entire neighbourhoods in Mokwa and surrounding villages, displacing thousands of residents and destroying critical infrastructure. Many farmers lost their seasonal crops, raising concerns about food security in the region.
The relief package includes direct cash transfers to affected families and grants for small business owners to help them restart their enterprises.
State emergency management officials confirmed that the distribution process has already commenced in the worst-hit areas, with priority given to families living in temporary shelters. The government has also begun long-term measures, including the construction of embankments and drainage systems to mitigate future flood risks.
While expressing gratitude for the intervention, community leaders appealed for additional support to rebuild damaged homes and replace farming equipment. The state government has pledged continued assistance as victims work to rebuild their lives after the Mokwa disaster.
