The Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET), Professor Charles Anosike, has emphasised the vital role of the media in disseminating accurate and timely weather information to the public.
Speaking at a recent event, Anosike stressed that effective communication of weather forecasts and climate data is essential for safeguarding lives, protecting property, and supporting key sectors such as agriculture, aviation, and disaster management.
Anosike highlighted the importance of collaboration between NiMET and media organisations to ensure that weather reports reach a wide audience in clear and accessible formats. He noted that accurate weather predictions can help farmers plan their activities, assist aviation authorities in ensuring flight safety, and enable emergency responders to prepare for extreme weather events.
The NiMET DG urged journalists to prioritise factual reporting and avoid sensationalism, as misleading weather information could have serious consequences for the public.
Furthermore, Anosike discussed NiMET’s ongoing efforts to improve weather monitoring and forecasting capabilities through advanced technology and research. He expressed optimism that with stronger media partnerships, the agency’s data could be better utilised to mitigate climate-related risks and enhance national resilience.
Anosike’s remarks underscore the need for reliable communication channels to keep citizens informed and prepared, reinforcing the media’s role as a crucial link between meteorological experts and the public.
