The Niger State Ministry of Mineral Resources, in collaboration with security agencies, has arrested 41 miners involved in illegal mining operations across the state. The arrests, which included 34 males and 7 females, were carried out during a targeted operation led by the Commissioner for Mineral Resources, Alhaji Garba Yahaya, on Friday.

The raid focused on identified hotspots for unregulated mining, including areas behind the PDP Secretariat near El-Amin University and the Caterigwari Mechanic Village in Minna.

During the operation, authorities confiscated various mining equipment, including pulping machines, hoses, shovels, and other crude tools used in illegal extraction activities. Commissioner Yahaya emphasised the state government’s resolve to eliminate illegal mining, which contributes to environmental degradation and land pollution.

He warned traditional leaders and landowners against selling or leasing land to unauthorised miners, stating that such practices enable harmful activities that undermine both community welfare and ecological sustainability.

Yahaya called for sustained public support in the fight against illegal mining, stressing that collective efforts are essential to achieving lasting change. He reassured residents of the administration’s commitment, under Governor Umar Mohammed Bago, to fostering a secure and economically viable environment that attracts both local and international investors.

The Commissioner reiterated that the government will continue its operations to rid the state of illegal miners until the menace is completely eradicated. “This government is determined to restore order, protect our environment, and ensure that the resources of Niger State benefit all its people,” he stated.

The crackdown reflects the administration’s broader strategy to enforce regulations, safeguard natural resources, and promote sustainable development across the state.
