A new security report has disclosed that at least 1,100 Nigerians lost their lives while 276 others were abducted in June 2025 due to attacks by terrorists and other non-state actors.
The findings, released by Beacon Security and Intelligence Limited, show a mixed picture of the country’s security situation, with some improvements compared to previous months but persistent violence in high-risk regions.
While overall security incidents dropped by 48.04% from May to June (from 895 to 465 cases), and abductions fell sharply by 74.59% (from 1,086 to 276), fatalities only decreased by 14.27% (from 1,296 to 1,111).
Civilians bore the brunt of the violence, accounting for 804 deaths or 72.37% of June’s total casualties. The North-Central region remained particularly volatile due to ongoing farmer-herder conflicts, while the North-West recorded the highest number of kidnappings at 72.10% of national cases.
The quarterly review presents a more concerning trend, with fatalities rising by 5.66% in Q2 2025 (3,499 deaths) compared to Q1 (3,301). The North-Central saw the most dramatic surge in killings at 34.97%, followed by the North-East (12.04%) and North-West (5.36%). However, abductions decreased by 11.45% across these regions during the same period.
Half-year statistics reveal 4,672 security incidents in H1 2025, showing a slight 1.08% decline from H2 2024 but a worrying 9.21% increase from H1 2024. Fatalities reached 6,800 in the first six months of 2025 – up 13.67% from the previous half-year period and 19.11% year-on-year. Zamfara State emerged as the most dangerous location, recording 1,088 deaths during this timeframe.
Despite some positive indicators in monthly data, the security report underscores Nigeria’s persistent security challenges, particularly in northern regions where violent attacks continue to claim hundreds of lives monthly. The findings highlight the need for sustained counterterrorism efforts and conflict resolution measures to protect vulnerable communities.
