ADC criticizes Tinubu over unfulfilled electricity promise

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticised President Bola Tinubu for failing to deliver on his campaign pledge to provide Nigerians with uninterrupted electricity within four years.

The party’s interim spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, issued the rebuke in a social media post on Saturday, highlighting the administration’s lack of progress in improving the country’s power sector.

Abdullahi reminded the president of his campaign promise, in which Tinubu vowed to ensure a 24-hour electricity supply and asked Nigerians not to re-elect him if he failed to deliver.

The ADC spokesman noted that instead of improvement, the situation has worsened under Tinubu’s leadership. He pointed out that electricity tariffs have increased by 240% since the president took office, while the national grid has collapsed 12 times, causing widespread blackouts across the country.

The opposition party further highlighted that over 90 million Nigerians still experience severe power shortages, with many households receiving only four to six hours of electricity daily under the government’s Band A-E classification system. In rural areas, approximately 50 million families remain completely without access to the national grid, relying on alternative energy sources for basic needs.

Abdullahi expressed disappointment that after 26 months in office, the Tinubu administration has not implemented any major reforms in the power sector or presented a clear roadmap to address the persistent electricity crisis. He lamented that millions of Nigerians still depend on mobile charging kiosks for their phones and spend significant amounts on fuel for generators due to the unreliable power supply.

The ADC’s statement reflects growing public frustration over the government’s inability to fulfil one of its key campaign promises, with the party calling for urgent action to address the nation’s energy challenges. As Tinubu’s administration passes the halfway mark of its tenure, critics are questioning whether there will be any meaningful improvement in Nigeria’s electricity situation before the end of its term.
