Nollywood actress Motilola Akinlami has opened up about the real reason behind her public announcement of her divorce from her ex-husband, Mr. Adekunle.
In an interview with fellow actress Biola Bayo, Motilola revealed that she was forced to make the announcement after a blogger threatened to expose her. The mother of two recalled how the blogger messaged her, claiming she was living a lie and threatened to reveal that she was no longer married.
I got a message from a blogger who said, ‘You live in disguise. I know you’ve left your marriage, and I’ll expose you.’ I thought to myself, ‘You want to blackmail me when I’ve got nothing else to lose?’ So, I decided to post it myself.”
The Yoruba actress went on to slam the societal habit of shaming women for their failed marriages. She insisted that no woman enters a marriage intending to leave—unless she’s “clinically insane.”
There’s this notion that some women go into marriage with the plan to leave. It makes no sense. Except a woman is clinically insane, no woman enters marriage thinking about divorce. We go in because we want forever.”
Motilola first made headlines in 2021 when she announced her separation from her Air Force officer husband. At the time, she explained that the decision to part ways was mutual and devoid of anger or violence. Despite the split, she emphasized that they remained committed to raising their two children together.
However, following her announcement, reports emerged alleging that her marriage ended due to an extramarital affair with fellow actor Kunle Afod. According to controversial blog Gistlover, Afod’s wife had discovered the alleged affair and confronted them, claiming that Motilola’s last child bore a striking resemblance to Kunle. These rumors allegedly contributed to her husband abandoning the marriage.
In 2023, Motilola made headlines again when she called out Kunle Afod and his wife, Desola, for allegedly sabotaging her career. She accused Desola of spreading false allegations against her on social media and pleaded with Kunle to stop defaming her, as she had moved on and was no longer interested in maintaining any relationship with him.
