Media personality Noble Igwe has joined voices reacting to the renaming of the iconic Charly Boy bus stop in Lagos, which has now been changed to “Baddo Bus Stop” in honour of Indigenous rap star and music mogul Olamide.
On Friday, July 25th, the Chairman of Bariga LCDA, Kolade Alabi David, made the announcement during a ceremony to unveil several infrastructural projects. He revealed that Ajidagan Street has also been renamed Olamide Adedeji Baddo Street, and the popular Charly Boy Bus Stop will now carry the name of the rap icon.
But not everyone is cheering the change.
Reacting via social media, Noble Igwe pointed out that while public opinion may vary, Charly Boy’s impact on Nigerian culture is far too significant to be erased by simply changing a name.
“Charly Boy isn’t just an ordinary figure; he’s earned his place in the history books,” Noble wrote.
“You don’t have to like him, but renaming a bus stop won’t erase his legacy.”
Charly Boy, also known as the “Area Fada,” has always been vocal about social justice and politics in Nigeria. During the 2023 general elections, he openly criticized the APC and PDP, declaring he would move to Ghana and seek citizenship if either Tinubu or Atiku became president.
In another instance, he stirred conversations when he vowed to walk naked through the streets of Lagos if Peter Obi won at the tribunal.
More recently, Charly Boy made headlines again after reacting to Pastor Adeboye’s apology regarding tithes, insisting the gesture meant nothing without a refund to church members. He boldly added that oftentimes, those with tattoos and piercings are more genuine than the so-called saints in Sunday pews.
