The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted rain and thunderstorms across the country from Sunday to Tuesday.
In its weather outlook released on Saturday in Abuja, the agency predicted moderate rainfall in parts of Jigawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Yobe, Borno, and Adamawa states on Sunday morning.
Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected in Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, Sokoto, Kebbi, Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, and Taraba states.
NiMet warned of a high flood risk in Kebbi, Gombe, and Bauchi states during this period. In the central region, light intermittent rains are expected in Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Niger State in the morning, with similar conditions extending to Nasarawa, Benue, Kwara, and Kogi states later in the day. Flooding is also likely in parts of Niger, Plateau, Kogi, and Benue states.
The southern region will experience cloudy skies in the morning, followed by moderate rains in Enugu, Anambra, Oyo, Osun, Edo, Ondo, Ogun, Ekiti, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Delta, Rivers, Lagos, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states. Osun State faces a high flood risk.
Similar conditions will persist on Monday and Tuesday, with thunderstorms and moderate rains expected in northern and central regions, while the south will see light rains.
NiMet advised the public to avoid driving in heavy rain and urged flood-prone states to activate emergency plans. Residents were also cautioned to stay informed through NiMet’s updates, avoid electrical hazards, and secure loose objects. Farmers were advised against applying fertilisers before rains, and airline operators were encouraged to check weather reports for flight planning.
