NFF defends support for late football legends’ families amid criticism

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has responded to allegations of neglecting the families of deceased Super Eagles players, asserting that it provided financial assistance for the funerals of both Christian Chukwu and Peter Rufai.

This clarification comes after former national team defender Taribo West publicly criticised both the NFF and Lagos State government for what he described as abandoning football heroes during their final rites.

Speaking during Rufai’s funeral in Lagos on Friday, West expressed deep disappointment with how Nigerian football authorities treat former stars, recalling similar situations with late players Stephen Keshi, Rashidi Yekini, and Thompson Oliha.

The former Inter Milan defender emotionally stated that the burden of funeral arrangements fell disproportionately on the families despite the players’ significant contributions to Nigerian football.

In an official statement, the NFF detailed its involvement in both funeral proceedings. The federation revealed it had provided financial support to Chukwu’s family and sent a delegation comprising Executive Committee Member Chief George Aluo, Barr. Okey Obi, and Mr. Chikelue Iloenyosi to represent the organisation.

Similarly, for Rufai’s funeral mass in Lagos, the NFF provided monetary assistance and was represented by Executive Committee Member Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi and Dr. Ademola Olajire.

Rufai, affectionately known as “Dodo Mayana” among football enthusiasts, served as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper during their victorious 1994 Africa Cup of Nations campaign and played a crucial role in the country’s inaugural FIFA World Cup appearance that same year.

The NFF emphasised its commitment to honouring the legacy of national team veterans, stating: “We honour their service, celebrate their legacy, and extend our continued support to their families.” The statement aimed to counter the narrative of institutional neglect while acknowledging the ongoing debate about adequate support for retired athletes in the country.
