Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has made a passionate appeal to residents of Nigeria’s South East region, urging them to actively participate in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
He delivered this message on Saturday during a public event held in Imo State, expressing concern over the region’s current low turnout.
El-Rufai emphasised that in a democratic society like Nigeria’s, the power to choose leaders is exercised through the ballot, making the act of voting fundamentally important. He framed voter registration not as a mere political activity, but as an essential civic duty and a right that every qualified citizen must take seriously to shape the nation’s future.
The former governor highlighted that recent data from the electoral commission shows the South East, including Imo State, is significantly lagging behind other regions in the number of new registrations completed over the past two weeks.
He directed a specific part of his appeal to the women of the region, recognising their influential role in mobilising their communities.
He called upon mothers, sisters, and daughters present to take the lead by not only registering themselves but also by encouraging their children and family members who are eligible to participate.
He pointed out that even citizens who are currently 16 years old and will turn 18 by the next election cycle should be mobilized to register now, ensuring they are prepared to exercise their franchise when the time comes. El-Rufai’s appeal underscores the critical link between voter enrollment and effective political representation.
