Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo Kanayo has taken his destiny into his own hands with the official launch of his YouTube channel, Kanayo O Kanayo TV.
Announcing the move on Instagram, the respected thespian said he is focused on telling good stories and giving opportunities to real talent. He stressed that movie-making has never been about fine faces but about performance, craft, and storytelling.
“I have decided to take my destiny into my own hands as it pertains to my channel on YouTube. Movie-making is not about being a fine face. It’s about being a good actor, a good performer. If you don’t like it, that’s unfortunate.”
Kanayo warned that Nollywood risks repeating the same mistakes of the past, where sponsors sidelined genuine actors because they didn’t believe they could sell films. According to him, the rise of so-called “YouTube faces” is already killing talent and limiting opportunities for new actors.
He expressed concern over the unsustainable trend of some actors blocking off schedules for a year, leaving little room for fresh talent or quality storytelling. Kanayo called on up-and-coming actors to join his platform to “create magic” together.
This is not the first time the veteran has spoken out on the state of Nollywood. Last year, he criticized filmmakers who rush content to YouTube at the expense of quality, accusing them of ruining the industry’s foundation. He also condemned the growing influence of social media personalities in Nollywood, noting that their lack of training undermines professionalism.
Kanayo has equally called out ladies desperate to enter the movie industry without skill, bluntly advising them to consider other trades if they lack the talent.
