The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a significant milestone in the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, with over 3.5 million Nigerians completing online pre-registration as of September 7, 2025.
According to a statement issued by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, the total number of online registrants reached 3,544,850 just three weeks after the exercise commenced on August 18.
A detailed breakdown of the figures reveals striking regional disparities. Osun State leads with 518,635 registrations, followed by Lagos (440,647), Ogun (348,217), and Borno (296,409).
Other top-performing states include Kebbi (193,781), Kaduna (187,480), and the Federal Capital Territory (180,260).
Conversely, the South-East region recorded alarmingly low numbers, with Enugu registering the lowest nationwide at just 1,203, followed by Ebonyi (1,616) and Abia (2,629).
This poor participation has raised concerns among stakeholders, including the Ohanaeze Ndigbo socio-cultural group, which attributed the low turnout to inadequate mobilisation and leadership failures in the region.
Demographically, youth participation dominated the process, with 64.65% of registrants falling within the 18 -34 age range.
Women slightly outnumbered men, accounting for 51.76% of online registrations. Students also constituted a significant portion, representing 24.89% of the total.
In response to the low registration numbers in Northern states, despite their large populations, regional governments have initiated mobilisation campaigns. States like Kano, Kaduna, and Zamfara are leveraging community organisations, religious leaders, and local officials to sensitise citizens and encourage participation.
INEC continues to emphasise that registration is only open to Nigerians aged 18 and above, warning against underage or anticipatory registration.
The commission also clarified that online pre-registration must be followed by in-person biometric capture to complete the process.
