Kwara NUT Decries Delayed Payment of Teachers’ Specific Allowances

Kwara State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has voiced deep disappointment over the continued delay in the payment of Teachers Specific Allowances (TSA) owed to its members.

In a statement issued by the State Chairman, Comrade Yusuf Wahab Agboola, and the Deputy Secretary-General, Mike Modesty, the union criticised the state government’s “graveyard silence” regarding the longstanding issue, despite multiple engagements and discussions.

The union specifically highlighted the non-payment of the 27.5% and 21% TSA, which are critical components of teachers’ remuneration.

These allowances, they emphasised, are essential not only for the welfare of educators but also for their motivation and overall productivity. The failure to disburse these funds has created significant unrest among teachers across the state.

Following a meeting with critical stakeholders held in Ilorin on Tuesday, the union leadership decided on a unique course of action.

Before issuing a formal ultimatum or considering industrial action, teachers will observe a day of fasting and prayer to seek divine intervention in resolving the matter. This approach underscores the depth of their frustration while also reflecting a preference for peaceful resolution.

While acknowledging the government’s recent approval of financial backing for the 2024 TESCOM promotion exercises, the NUT maintained that the unpaid allowances remain a top priority.

The union has urged all teachers in Kwara State to remain calm and await further directives from their leadership as they continue to pursue a constructive dialogue with the government.
