Renowned Nigerian columnist and Genevieve Magazine publisher, Betty Irabor, has opened up about a humbling moment in her marriage as she spoke against pride between couples.
In a heartfelt post on Instagram, Betty recounted how she once slammed the door on her husband, Soni Irabor, after a disagreement. As she stormed out, she said she felt a strong conviction from the Holy Spirit telling her to return and apologize, something she initially resisted.
According to her, peace eluded her throughout the day until she eventually went back to make peace. To her surprise, her husband showed compassion instead of anger. “He was more concerned about my knees than my offence,” she wrote, describing how that simple act broke her and taught her the power of humility in marriage.
Betty emphasized that knowing when to apologize or surrender during a marital conflict is not weakness but wisdom. She urged couples never to let pride overshadow love, reminding them that marriage is not about who wins an argument but who protects the peace.
“Pride must never speak louder than love.
Marriage isn’t about who wins an argument; it’s about who guards the peace,” she wrote.
The respected media personality, who recently celebrated 42 years of marriage with her husband, reflected on their journey through challenges, from secondary infertility to depression, and how they have remained each other’s strongest support.
In previous years, Betty has also encouraged women facing abuse in marriage to prioritize their safety and mental health, stressing that “marriage is not a do-or-die affair.”
