According to Goal, Chelsea will be forced to sell experienced players this summer. Especially if they hope to offset their wild spending spree under new ownership.
In order to meet Financial Fair Play regulations following a loss of 121 million pounds in the club’s annual accounts for 2021-22, the club will have to sell off some players.
Current ownership blames the old regime, led by Roman Abramovich, for their precarious financial situation.
Boehly has been dishing out long-term contracts. This includes Mudryk on an eight-and-a-half-year deal, Fofana on a seven-year, Badiashile on a six-and-a-half-year contract, Cucurella for six years and Sterling for five.
This lowers the annual cost of each player – which puts them at less risk of breaching FFP rules. Such losses recorded for 2021-22 do not take into account this season’s mass expenditure. This is with highlights to the difficult task at hand Boehly and Co. face in the summer. It may also mean recent plans for a new stadium are put on hold, if not cancelled altogether.
Chelsea could improve their FFP by offloading some of their players. Big signings like Kai Harvetz, Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic are likely to leave in the summer.
