Abia: Residents Panic as Erosion Destroys Three Houses

Three houses in Umobia Housing Estate, Umuahia South LGA, Abia State, have been destroyed by raging erosion.

The calamity, which has already devastated numerous other homes in the estate, including farms, is threatening further buildings in the neighbourhood.

While showing media around their damaged houses, some victims of the environmental crisis pleaded with the Abia State administration to come to their aid, warning that additional structures might collapse in the coming weeks if nothing is done.

They noted that the erosion problem, which began on a minor scale, is now causing deep gullies around people’s homes and causing damage to numerous access routes.

Some of the victims, including Mrs Ndidi Nwosu, have expressed worry that they may soon be homeless unless the government intervenes.

Residents of the Umobia Housing Estate claimed they had spent millions in the past attempting to manage the erosion, but regretted that the gullies’ growing width and depth had beyond their ability to regulate.

Mr Nkenna Gilbert, whose house had fallen due to excessive erosion, mourned being displaced by the calamity.

Other residents of the Housing Estate who talked about their situations stated their properties had begun to exhibit symptoms of trouble as a result of the ongoing erosion.

They pleaded with Governor Alex Otti to act quickly and save them.
