Asa Asika Faces Backlash After Casual Remarks on Engagement and Gender Roles in Relationships

Nigerian talent manager Asa Asika, fresh off the excitement of his recent engagement to his fiancée Leona, found himself at the center of an online debate after making a post about relationships and reactions to engagements.

The post, which was meant to provide a lighthearted analysis of how he and his fiancée handled the news, sparked mixed reactions from netizens.

Asa shared that while Leona was actively responding to congratulatory messages on her iPad, he was laid-back, playing video games and relaxing. His point seemed to be that women tend to get more excited about engagement news, while men take a more nonchalant approach.

However, many social media users weren’t pleased with Asa Asika’s take, seeing it as dismissive and even condescending towards his fiancée’s excitement. Some took it as a thinly veiled dig at singles, while others felt he was promoting outdated gender stereotypes.

Here are some of the reactions from social media:

  • @therubyredridinghood wrote: “Meaning what??? Meaning you don’t care and she’s the one excited or what?”
  • @berry.queen added: “Oya night don reach. Make she dey go her house while we prepare for the wedding. Na small thing dey vex me.”
  • @an_na_bella11 said: “As a single girl that I am, I’ll never ever forget 2024!!”
  • @colynxswiss remarked: “Dear Asa, I don’t see how this information is important to us.”
  • @dollypizu1 criticized: “Person dey reply her messages like she always does and you are watching football. What has this got to do with men or women being different? I don’t understand what he is saying.”

The negative reactions didn’t stop there, with others questioning whether Asa was trying to downplay the significance of the engagement. One user even brought in cultural tensions, likening the scenario to public responses when an Igbo man marries a Yoruba woman.

  • @beth_elbath commented: “When an Igbo guy weds a Yoruba girl, Yoruba ladies go quiet, but when their brothers pick an Igbo girl over them, they’ll be all over the internet crying. Eg. Davido and Chioma.”

Despite the mixed reactions, it appears Asa Asika intended to share a humorous take on his experience, but it backfired, with many seeing it as a way to shade singles or minimize the importance of engagement excitement, especially on the part of women.

For now, Asa has not responded to the criticism, and it remains to be seen if he will address the growing online chatter surrounding his remarks.
