President Muhammadu Buhari celebrated the 89th birthday of Ọba Sikiru Adetọna, the Awujale of Ijebu Kingdom in Ogun State. Buhari has declared the monarch one of Nigeria’s most prominent figures.
In a statement made Wednesday by the president’s spokeswoman, Femi Adesina, in Abuja, the president praised his Adetọna qualities in his commitment to the well-being of his people and Nigeria.
He said:
“Your dedication to the welfare of your subjects and our country and its people is highly appreciated.
”Your vision, warmth and commitment to your friends are incomparable. I am very proud of my relationship with Your Majesty. May you continue to lead a long and healthy life.”
Buhari also prayed to Allah to give the monarch the strength and health to reach all his goals.
He urged him to continue making numerous efforts for our nation’s progress.
Oba Sikiru Adetona was born on May 10, 1930, and became the Awujale on April 2, 1960. He is the fifth Awujale from the Adetona family and has reigned for over 60 years. The Awujale is traditionally seen as the chief custodian of the culture and traditions of the Ijebu people and oversees various religious, cultural, and social events.
The Ijebu kingdom gained popularity for its rich history, culture, and traditions, including the widely acclaimed Ojude Oba Festival, which the Ijebu people celebrate yearly to pay homage to the Awujale.
