Nigerians have taken Nollywood actor and comedian Ayodeji Richard Makun, popularly known as AY Comedian, to task over his remark about his brother’s wife during a birthday celebration, stirring mixed reactions online.

A viral video from Yomi Casual’s 40th birthday party over the weekend captured AY praising his brother’s wife while making a comment that many interpreted as a dig at his ex-wife, Mabel Makun. Speaking at the event, AY said, “Abeg make una help me clap for wife wey dey house,” a statement that quickly sparked controversy.

Social media users did not hold back their criticism:

This is not the first time AY’s remarks have drawn public attention. In April 2023, the comedian confirmed the end of his nearly 20-year marriage to Mabel Makun. Reflecting on the breakdown, AY admitted to making compromises during their union but cautioned against spreading false narratives that could affect their teenage daughter.

Mabel also addressed the situation, sharing her hope for privacy while navigating her new reality. She expressed her pain over false stories about her but chose to remain silent for the sake of her children.

Amid the backlash, AY’s siblings have shown unwavering support for him. His sister, Bukky Makun, recently shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, celebrating his positive impact on their family.

She described AY as a “guiding light” whose encouragement and wisdom have significantly contributed to their achievements. “Your happiness comes from our victories, and that speaks volumes about the kind of big brother you are,” she wrote. Bukky also urged AY to ignore the negativity and focus on the bright future ahead.
