Nigerian Afrobeat sensation Ayra Starr has achieved a historic milestone, celebrating a double victory at the prestigious 2025 MOBO Awards held in Newcastle, UK.
The Mavins Records star made history by becoming the first woman in 16 years to win the Best African Music Act category, surpassing industry heavyweights like Asake, Tems, and South Africa’s Tyla. Ayra also clinched the Best International Music Act award, triumphing over global icons including Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, Megan Thee Stallion, and Latto.
During her emotional acceptance speech, Ayra Starr expressed her heartfelt gratitude to her team, supporters, and fans, reflecting on the significance of this moment in her career.
“Okay, this is my first MOBO. And this is the first time I’m winning a MOBO Award – make some noise! I am actually shaking right now. I am actually nervous.
Thank you so much to everybody who supported me. Thank you to my team – my amazing MOB STARS. My amazing brothers who make music with me – the producers in the studio – my studio partners in crime; my label – MAVINS Record, Embryo, my mummy. Thank you so much. Thank you, MOBOs.”
Ayra Starr’s rise to stardom has been nothing short of remarkable. Earlier this year, she earned a BET Award nomination for Best New Artist, adding to her impressive accolades. The Commas singer also received a Grammy nomination, further cementing her reputation as one of Afrobeat’s brightest stars.
In a June 2025 interview with Spotify, Ayra reflected on the moments that shaped her journey to success. She revealed that, even at the age of 10, she envisioned herself achieving fame, likening her aspirations to the fictional Disney character Hannah Montana.
With this historic double win at the MOBO Awards, Ayra Starr continues to set new benchmarks in African and global music, solidifying her place as a force to be reckoned with.
