Big Brother Naija star Bambam, whose real name is Bamike Olawunmi Adenibuyan, has revealed the often-hidden struggles of childbirth, detailing her near-death experience and postpartum journey during a recent episode of Me and My Girls on Fertitude.
In the candid discussion, Bambam shed light on the harsh realities of childbirth, emphasizing the need for women to advocate for themselves in medical situations. She recounted a life-threatening ordeal during delivery that left her kidney, heart, and liver shutting down. Her daughter had detached from the placenta and would have suffered oxygen deprivation if they had arrived at the hospital even a minute later.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the mother of two shared how the experience haunted her:
Every time I look at her, I just say ‘what if.’ That word tormented me. What if the doctor wasn’t attentive? What if the nurse didn’t do her due diligence? It haunted me for a while. I had to get therapy to walk me through being grateful.”
The traumatic experience left a lasting impact, prompting Bambam to seek professional help to process her emotions and find gratitude in survival.
Bambam also spoke about her previous struggles with postpartum depression and preeclampsia during her first pregnancy. In earlier interviews, she revealed how societal pressures and body-shaming affected her mental health. Despite the criticism, she credited her husband, Teddy A, for his unwavering support and reassurance, helping her navigate motherhood with confidence.
“When my daughter was born, she had a different skin tone, and I questioned the doctor. I also battled postpartum depression and had to deal with my changing body. Thankfully, my husband never made me feel bad or body-shamed me,” Bambam recalled.
