Former Big Brother Naija star Uriel Oputa recently opened up about the profound life lessons she has learned while caring for her ailing mother.
In an emotional Instagram story, Uriel revealed how the demanding task of feeding her mother breakfast, lunch, and dinner left her feeling unproductive. Yet, it also taught her one of the biggest lessons: forgiveness.
She shared that her mother’s health struggles, caused by high blood pressure and vascular dementia, made her confront unresolved anger. Uriel explained how she had to forgive her mother for not taking her medication on time, which might have prevented the stroke and subsequent dementia. Additionally, she forgave her mother for the moments she might miss in the future, like being present when Uriel has children or performing traditional rites for a new mother. Uriel also forgave herself for moments of frustration and pain.
This transformative experience has fueled Uriel’s passion for health advocacy and prevention. She wants to raise awareness to help others avoid going through the same painful journey she’s facing. “Because it’s incredibly hard,” she shared, adding a heartfelt wish for the way things used to be.
Uriel has previously shared how caring for her mother with dementia is both heartbreaking and rewarding. Last year, she posted a tearful reunion in London, where her mother, overcome with emotion, reunited with her. In June 2022, Uriel experienced a miracle when her mother took her first step after being told she would never walk again. Uriel expressed gratitude and faith, encouraging her followers to trust in God and do their part.
