Nollywood actress and media personality Bimbo Akintola has opened up about the financial disparities she observes among her colleagues in the film industry.
In a recent interview, she candidly expressed her curiosity about the lavish lifestyles of some actresses, stating that she often gets questioned about why she isn’t as wealthy as others.
Bimbo revealed that people frequently approach her, pointing out the wealth of certain actresses, and she feels the need to clarify her own financial situation. “I am not rich,” she affirmed, questioning the sources of income for those living opulently. She noted that while some actresses may come from affluent backgrounds or have additional businesses, there are also rumors about some engaging in relationships with politicians to fund their lifestyles.
Some of the lifestyles we see on social media can be real, and if it’s real, where does it come from? People come up to me and say, ‘Look at those actresses. They are very rich,’ and I tell them that I am not rich,” Bimbo stated. She emphasized the importance of understanding the reality behind such appearances, urging people to inquire directly with their colleagues about how they sustain their wealth.
Bimbo’s remarks echo previous concerns raised by other industry figures. A few months ago, Yoruba actor Funsho Adeolu questioned the income sources of some female colleagues, noting that he charges higher fees for his roles yet sees them driving more luxurious cars. Comedian Ali Baba also criticized actresses for their lavish lifestyles, citing instances where some have received sponsorships while creating the illusion of self-funded luxury.
Moreover, actor Kunle Remi shared his surprise at seeing some actresses arrive at movie sets in expensive cars, despite the generally low pay in Nollywood. Similarly, actress Angela Okorie has urged her colleagues to stop pretending that their wealth solely comes from acting, highlighting that many have side hustles that contribute to their financial success.
