Nigerian crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has been sentenced to six months imprisonment without the option of a fine.
The judgment was delivered by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos on April 12, 2024.
Bobrisky’s sentencing stems from his arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged currency mutilation and abuse of the Naira. During his court hearing, Bobrisky pleaded guilty to the offense of Naira abuse and implored the court for leniency, promising to use his platform to educate his followers on responsible behavior regarding money spraying.
Despite Bobrisky’s plea for another chance and mercy from the court, Justice Awogboro upheld the six-month jail term without the option of a fine. The court had previously reserved Bobrisky’s case until April 9th.
Following the news of Bobrisky’s sentencing, there has been an outpouring of support from various quarters. Actor Yomi Fabiyi expressed solidarity with Bobrisky, stating that his thoughts and prayers are with him during this challenging time. Additionally, Iyabo Ojo’s partner, Paulo Okoye, made an impassioned plea to the EFCC, highlighting that many Nigerians, including himself, are guilty of Naira abuse.
Actress Eniola Ajao, whose event led to Bobrisky’s arrest, expressed regret over the situation and pledged her support for him, appealing to the EFCC on his behalf. Similarly, actress and skincare expert Simi Gold offered words of encouragement, urging Bobrisky to stay strong and have faith in his eventual release.
