The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Wednesday, destroyed a weapons truck and neutralised eight terrorists in Baranga village, Marte Local Government Area, Borno.
The NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, said in an Abuja statement that the attack was carried out when the forces were on an armed reconnaissance operation in the region.
According to Gabkwet, the airstrike was part of a prolonged offensive against terrorist remnants in the North East.
He stated that the potential attack offered itself when two armed terrorists on a motorbike were tracked along an active track.
Gabkwet said the terrorists sought refuge beneath heavy bush after spotting the plane, and that a weapons vehicle with eight terrorists emerged out of nowhere, rushing away to avoid the plane.
He stated:
“Subsequently, the gun truck was engaged and destroyed, thus eliminating the terrorists.
“Remnants of terrorists in the Northeast continue to seek the covers of thick forests and vegetation to evade being detected by the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies.
“This strike is yet again a clear indication of the commitment of the AFN towards ensuring terrorists find it difficult to randomly roam about freely, attacking law-abiding Nigerians.”
