Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has raised serious concerns over the worsening security situation in Borno State, particularly in the Marte area.

He stated that the crisis is not about politics but about the safety and welfare of Nigerians, calling for urgent and effective intervention from the federal government.

In a post shared on his official social media account, Obi expressed alarm over reports that more than 300 communities in Marte are at risk and that over 20,000 people have already been displaced by the resurgence of insurgent attacks.

He commended Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum for his hands-on approach and bravery, especially for spending the night in the troubled area as a sign of solidarity and leadership.

Obi criticised the federal government’s response, saying it has been slow and inadequate in addressing the growing threat. He warned that terrorist groups are regrouping around Lake Chad and the Mandara Hills, posing a renewed danger to the region.

He emphasised that these developments require immediate security reinforcements and substantial humanitarian assistance for displaced citizens.

He stated that Nigeria cannot be serious about unity and security if a sitting governor has to publicly plead for federal aid to protect his region.

Obi maintained that leadership at the national level must rise above politics and respond with urgency and empathy.

Concluding his remarks, Obi urged the federal government to match Governor Zulum’s commitment and take decisive action to prevent further deterioration. He reaffirmed his belief that with the right leadership, a peaceful and secure Nigeria is possible.
