Former President Muhammadu Buhari and Senate President Godswill Akpabio have expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of 22 athletes from Kano State who lost their lives in a road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State.
In a statement released on Sunday, Buhari conveyed his devastation over the recent tragedies in Niger and Kano states. He mourned the death of 151 Mokwa residents following a severe flood and the passing of the 22 Kano athletes. He noted that the quick succession of these tragedies has left many Nigerians in shock.
“I am deeply pained by the loss of lives due to the floods in Niger State and the road accident in Kano State. The deaths are painful and devastating,” Buhari stated. He extended his condolences to the families and friends of all those who have lost loved ones and prayed for the injured to recover swiftly.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio also expressed his sadness over the Kano athletes’ deaths, describing it as a tragic loss. In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio sent his condolences to Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the families of the bereaved.
“It is with profound sadness that I received the news of the tragic death of over 20 members of the Kano State contingent that participated in the National Sports Festival in Ogun State,” Akpabio said.
“On behalf of my family, constituents, the Nigerian Senate, and the entire National Assembly, I extend my deepest condolences to Your Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the government, and people of Kano State.”
Akpabio added that the tragic loss is a reminder to cherish life. “This devastating loss is a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of prioritising the safety and well-being of our citizens, particularly our youth. We stand in solidarity with the families of the deceased and pray for their swift healing and comfort during this difficult time,” he added.
