Bukky Raji Opens Up on Strained Relationship with Sister Remi Surutu

Nollywood actress Bukky Raji has spoken out about the rift between her and her older sister, Remi Surutu, shedding light on a long-standing family divide.

In a recent interview with Biola Bayo, Bukky explained that she and Remi are biological sisters who share the same father but have different mothers. Despite their blood connection, the two actresses have not maintained a close bond.

Recalling a painful moment, Bukky said she invited Remi to her wedding introduction in Ikorodu, but her sister didn’t attend—despite living in the same area. She said she made efforts to reach out and mend things, including involving their mother and mutual contacts, but none of her attempts led to reconciliation.

Remi Surutu is my blood sister, my older sister. She is my father’s daughter, we are from the same father. Biologically, she is my sister, but otherwise, I don’t know,” she said. “She wasn’t at my introduction despite living in Ikorodu. I did my introduction in Ikorodu; when planning the wedding, I invited her, and she said okay, but eventually, she didn’t come. I tried to reach out. My mum made sure I called everyone I needed to call.”

Bukky expressed regret that family issues between their mothers had spilled over into their own relationship. “If she wasn’t my blood sister and I was seeing her from afar, I would have been her die-hard fan,” she said. “We shouldn’t be bringing the fight between our mums into our relationship. So far, we are on the same page; bonding isn’t bad.”

She also opened up about why she got married later in life. As the last child in her family, Bukky said she never felt any pressure to settle down. “My getting married late was because I am the last born of the family. My father died when I was 7, and my mum chose not to remarry. I never thought it was important to get married,” she shared.

Bukky’s story reflects a pattern of strained family relationships within the entertainment industry.

Last year, actress Jumoke George revealed that she was rejected by both parents. After choosing to stay with her father following a divorce, her mother distanced herself, while her stepmother’s hostility further strained things with her father.

Actor Charles Inojie shared a similar experience. His mother abandoned him at 8 months old, and after remarrying, his father reportedly allowed his new wife to mistreat him.

Bimbo Ademoye also revealed that her mother walked away when she was just two. Though she later tried to build a relationship with her, Bimbo noted that the emotional gap remained, despite covering her mother’s expenses.

Even James Brown, the internet personality, has opened up about family rejection. He praised his grandmother for raising him after his mother left just two days after his birth. Though his mother has tried to reconnect, James said he made the decision to cut ties.
