Grammy award-winning music sensation Burna Boy recently stirred up conversations online after explaining why he won’t be giving away millions of dollars to his fans.

In a post shared on his Instagram story, the Afrobeats star admitted that he doesn’t need most of his wealth and could easily give out millions, but his disdain for social media keeps him from doing so.

“I don’t even need most of the stuff I got. I could really give out millions of dollars right now. But I don’t like y’all,” Burna wrote, sparking a wave of reactions across social platforms.

Fans and critics alike took to the comments section to express their opinions:

  • One Deal Wkay wrote, “The times you liked us how much did you give us?”
  • Another user, Poshest Hope, added, “We don’t like you too. We love David.”
  • Mr Sammy11 commented, “Keep your money Oga, you too talk.”

While some criticized his statement, comparing him to fellow artist Davido, who is known for his generosity, others pointed to Burna Boy’s charitable works outside the spotlight. Despite his bold remarks, Burna has a history of quiet philanthropy, especially in his hometown of Port Harcourt.

In June, the music star made headlines when he paid the medical bills for all patients at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. He also generously donated over N10 million to students at the University of Port Harcourt, stating that he visited the city to show love to his people and support those in financial need, such as those struggling with school fees.

Just a couple of months prior, Burna Boy renovated the Cheshire Orphanage Home in Port Harcourt, a facility dedicated to caring for individuals with disabilities and special needs, through the DashMe Foundation.

During an Instagram Live session, Burna Boy explained why he avoids chasing social media clout through giveaways. He revealed that contrary to popular belief, he does a lot of charitable work, but prefers to keep it offline. According to him, the people who truly need help are not on social media. “I do giveaways to places that matter, to people that need it, and most of them are not on the internet,” he stated.
