The Cross River Government has announced a complete halt to forest logging activity throughout the state.
This was said in a statement signed on Saturday by Prof. Anthony Owan-Enoh, Cross River’s Secretary to the Government (SSG), and made available to media.
It should be noted that the state government had previously implemented a “permiteeship” system, which enabled the state’s Forestry Commission to issue permission to loggers to fall particular trees.
However, this has not been effective, since illicit logging has persisted across the state, including in places under official protection like as parks.
“In spite of the forbearance by government on the activities of timber loggers in the state, government notes the persisting refusal and or neglect to keep to the terms stipulated by government for the felling of trees.
“Consequently, Gov.. Bassey Otu has suspended further logging activities in the state.
“Security agencies are to arrest offenders and confiscate any log and machinery deployed thereto,” the SSG stated.
Owan-Enoh urged timber loggers to seek more instructions from the state forestry commission.
