Chelsea Veteran Thiago Silva Hints at Retirement as Contract Nears End

Chelsea’s experienced defender Thiago Silva has dropped a significant hint regarding his potential retirement as his contract with the club approaches its conclusion. The Brazilian, who turned 39 in September, initially joined Chelsea as a short-term solution in 2020 but has since become a pivotal part of the team’s defense. While his current contract expires next summer, Silva is contemplating whether he will continue playing beyond 2024.

In an interview with Sky Italia, Silva expressed, “The end of my career is approaching, and it’s not a simple thing. I have to think if I stop, or if I continue and where I go: there’s the family, I have two sons who play at Chelsea. At the moment, I take this opportunity to play and make the most of this last year of my contract at Chelsea. But I’m very happy and proud of the career I’ve had, of what I’m doing now at 39 years old. I have prepared all my life to make the most of my work: football is my passion. Surely after I retire, I will continue in this world, I don’t know how yet.”

Despite the recent turbulence at Stamford Bridge, Silva has been a consistent positive for the club. If he decides to retire at the end of the season, it will be a significant loss for Chelsea, and he may well be remembered as a legend in the football world. Chelsea faces Blackburn Rovers in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before taking on local rivals Tottenham the following Monday.
