Chelsea’s £37 Million Lukaku Deal Hangs in the Balance After Mourinho’s Roma Exit

Chelsea’s anticipated permanent sale of Romelu Lukaku to Roma for £37 million ($47m/€43.2m) is now facing uncertainty following Jose Mourinho’s recent sacking. The agreement, which seemed solid after Lukaku’s loan move to Roma, is now in jeopardy due to the managerial change.

Initially, Mourinho’s trust in Lukaku was evident during the loan spell, leading to discussions for a permanent deal in the summer of 2024. However, Mourinho’s abrupt departure, prompted by Roma’s season struggles, raises concerns about the completion of the deal, complicating Chelsea’s financial plans amid FFP constraints.

With Daniele De Rossi taking charge at Roma, Lukaku’s future at the Serie A club becomes uncertain. The Belgian striker, with two years remaining on his Chelsea contract, may need to impress De Rossi to secure a continued stay in Italy. Failing to do so could see Lukaku returning to the Premier League.

Despite doubts surrounding his summer move, Lukaku has had a commendable campaign at Roma, contributing 14 goals in 25 games. His first opportunity to impress De Rossi comes as Roma faces Hellas Verona on Saturday, January 20. The outcome of this match could influence Lukaku’s fate under the new management.
