According to the Nigeria Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), 922 people have been infected with cholera. Furthermore, 32 died in the nine weeks from 2 January to 5 March 2023. States with cholera cases are Cross River (647), Eboni (97), Abia (72), Niger (38) and Zamfara (28), Bayelsa (16), Ondo (10) and Katsina (5). , Kano (3 people), Sokoto (3 people), Bauchi (2 people), Osan (1 person).
Deaths were recorded in the following states: Cross River (16), Ebonyi (6), Abia (6), Niger (2), Zamfara (1), Bayelsa (1).
The NCDC’s epidemiological report showed that of all the cases recorded since the beginning of the year, Cross River had 647 cases of cholera, accounting for 70 per cent of the cumulative cases across the country.
The state also recorded 16 deaths, accounting for 50 per cent of all cholera deaths in the country.
NCDC said-
“National multi-sectoral Cholera TWG continues to monitor response across states. As of March 5, 2023, a total of 922 suspected cases, including 32 deaths (Case Fatality Ratio, CFR, 3.5 per cent) have been reported from 12 states.
“Of the suspected cases since the beginning of the year, the age group above 45 years is the most affected for male and female. Of all suspected cases, 54 per cent are males and 46 per cent are females.
“Six states — Cross River (647 cases), Ebonyi (97 cases), Abia (72 cases), Niger (38 cases), and Zamfara (28 cases) – account for 96 per cent of all cumulative cases.”
